SCOTT Mouthaan believes he had a good foundation for entering the building trade.
The Belmont man was named Apprentice of the Year at the Housing Industry of Australia-CSR awards in Sydney on Saturday.Not resting on his laurels, Mr Mouthaan, 22, was back at work yesterday on a building site at Shortland.He said he was surprised when his name was announced at the Sydney Convention Centre by HIA managing director Ron Silberberg as the nation's leading building apprentice.The judges said the young builder had a strong work ethic and a pride in the industry in which he worked."To win it was a great honour," Mr Mouthaan said. "I don't think it has sunk in yet."Mr Mouthaan said he became interested in carpentry and joinery during his industrial arts course at Callaghan Senior College."I've wanted to be a builder ever since," he said.He has completed his four-year trade apprenticeship and is now studying his certificate IV contractor's licence with host trainers Ben and Danny Griffiths of Griffiths Building Services. He hopes to launch his own building business after gaining more experience in the trade.
